However, friends and family who knew Mom and Dad so well knew instinctively that Dad without Mom was like skiing without snow. </div><br /><div>Dad was born in Vancouver and was a true westcoaster. He embraced the lifestyle and spent many of his teenage years hiking up Grouse Mountain and skiing down. Living in Point Grey, this involved taking the streetcar to the ferry, riding the ferry, transferring to a street car, and then hiking up the mountain. He would stay in the Tyee ski cabin on the hill and on a good day, get in 4-5 runs. Now that is what I call passion! In fact, passion is one of the words I would consider when thinking about Dad. </div><br /><div>He pursued his interests with passion. Of course, his life-long passion was Mom, and he always wanted her to feel safe and secure.</div><br /><div>Dad was an accomplished athlete throughout life. In high school, he played basketball, where his team competed and won several championship games, including Provincial High School Title. As a Tyee ski racer, he competed and placed in many races. Dad continued playing sports during his University years, where he received his degree in Commerce at UBC. </div><br /><div>After marrying Mom in 1955, they moved to Toronto, where he began his life-long career in the lumber business. His competitiveness shined with Cooper-Widman and after a few years, and one child, Christie, he was transferred with the company to Edmonton. </div><br /><div>Along with thriving in business there, Dad competed with the Eskimo Ski Club, the businessman's volleyball league and played competitive handball. In 1964, with one more child in tow, me, they were transferred to Vancouver. In West Vancouver, they build their dream home. </div><br /><div>Dad joined the Semour Golf club and took up golf with a passion. In the winter, he re-connected with the Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club, and coached in the Nancy Greene Ski League. He developed and re-kindled many friends through skiing, as well, he installed a love of competing and for the outdoors with his children. </div><br /><div>Once Jamie arrived, his family was complete and we settled int a great life of skiing, holidays in the Okanogan, fishing trips and swimming at the beach. Dad sent time with each of us, encouraging us to pursue our own passions and supporting our decisions throughout life. </div><br /><div>He was tough when he needed to be, and was proud and full of praise when it was warranted, as well, he like to tease us, even though it sometimes went a bit too far, he always meant well. </div><br /><div>Retirement for Dad meant starting his own lumber business in Qualicum, but also balancing his lifestyle by living on a golf course and playing golf at least 4 times a week. His work allowed him to keep in touch with his industry friends and augment his income to allow Mom and him to travel during non-gof months. </div><br /><div>His slower pace in life allowed time to see his grandchildren grow and develop and he took pleasure in following their academic and athletic pursuits. </div><br /><div>After a massive stroke in 2007, Dad had an amazing recovery, which we all knew was due to his inner strength. One of the first things he told me when he could speak again was that he wanted to live to make sure that Mom would be looked after. </div><br /><div>He never complained about his stroke and the fact that he would never swing a club again, and he settled into the routine at the Gardens Care Home. Mom and Dad enjoyed the great entertainment, happy hours, and the gardening club during his time there. He continued to be an avid reader and golf/hockey watcher. Last summer, he discovered that he could drive his wheelchair all the way home, and he did so every sunny day. Unless Mom was on the golf course that day, then, he would show up there! Mom was so pleased to see him, and they had a great time with this. He put on more miles on that wheelchair last summer than I did on my motorcycle! </div><br /><div>The last few months, Dad was not well, and he seemed to have lost the twinkle in his blue eyes when Mom was diagnosed with cancer. </div><br /><div>We know his is in a much better pace now, either trying to talk Mom down a black diamond ski run, or teeing off in a couples tournament where here are no sand traps or water hazards.</div><br /><div>Big Jim, we love you and miss you.</div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-2239000553836072022011-02-19T17:15:00.000-08:002011-02-19T17:49:54.597-08:00Edie Loutit 1930-2011<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcjadBQYgpQCT67hlZpVa2hv-tDi5FodvHWKskKc2aJxiAEyPuww447yHcbrVCDBpB2YP5Il2JmgxFd8kUnRFaUguzA0RqkI9PillqWEZ1dXsNNdE2P6XMJM8M1LIXsSEfLj8gh7mRz-lU/s1600/mom+photo+2.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575575154032332994" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcjadBQYgpQCT67hlZpVa2hv-tDi5FodvHWKskKc2aJxiAEyPuww447yHcbrVCDBpB2YP5Il2JmgxFd8kUnRFaUguzA0RqkI9PillqWEZ1dXsNNdE2P6XMJM8M1LIXsSEfLj8gh7mRz-lU/s320/mom+photo+2.jpg" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoRluZOxIYZdVAeZyaSQDnGuZYipN289PwKh45rtpft_m3sYTc_aakoeYqIRZa39hFlEDTsvS0T-IqvERdK4xrkoSpKEGrVenq7g6XDOBeE6mCpWGC-42rLPq3UfhfBWdtKsZC-lfLqFvZ/s1600/mom+photo.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 120px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 160px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575574497846658210" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoRluZOxIYZdVAeZyaSQDnGuZYipN289PwKh45rtpft_m3sYTc_aakoeYqIRZa39hFlEDTsvS0T-IqvERdK4xrkoSpKEGrVenq7g6XDOBeE6mCpWGC-42rLPq3UfhfBWdtKsZC-lfLqFvZ/s320/mom+photo.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div> </div><div>Because I have loved life,</div><div>I shall have no sorrow to die. Emily Burr</div><div> </div><div>Mom <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">truly</span> loved her life, and she believed she was blessed with so much happiness throughout it.</div><div> </div><div>She was born and raised in Vancouver and graduated from McGee High School, where <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">she</span> retained many long term friendships. Of course, the most significant meeting was the love of her life, Dad. They were in each other's grade one class, and started dating on and off since grade nine. A true love story.</div><div> </div><div>She graduated from <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">UBC</span> and enjoyed her time there as a Sorority member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. From the photos and stories there, it's a wonder they even got any school work done!</div><div>After graduation, she became an Orthopedic technologist and worked at <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">VGH</span> and at Seattle Orthopedic Hospital.</div><div> </div><div>Mom and Dad were married in 1955, and moved to Toronto, where Mom worked at a doctor's office until Christie was born. Dad was then transferred to Edmonton, where they expanded the family by one more daughter, me. They made good friends in Edmonton, but as true <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-error">Westcoasters</span>, were thrilled to transfer one more time to their home city- Vancouver.</div><div>After building their dream home in West Vancouver, the family grew by one more, Dad's namesake, James, better known as Jamie.</div><div> </div><div>Mom and Dad were a great <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">twosome</span>, and always presented a united front when <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_6" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">encouraging</span> us along our paths. They were also the best of friends, participating together in <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_7" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">badminton</span>, skiing, bridge golf and sharing a passion for gardening.</div><div> </div><div>Along with her dear school friends, Mom developed strong and enduring friendships with ski buddies, golf pals, and bridge mates. She had a great sense of humor and love to host and attend parties. We all have great memories of her annual Christmas Eve parties she hosted for our Aunts, Uncles, cousins and later their children - a highlight that showcased her supreme organizational and <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_8" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">culinary</span> skills.</div><div> </div><div>Mom and Dad made a point of going out every Saturday night for date night, as well, then booked a week ski holiday with their close <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_9" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">friends</span> every year, where they took the time to relax and <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_10" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">rejuvenate</span>. There were so many photos of the great times they shared on and off the ski hill.</div><div> </div><div>Golf was another passion for Mom, and she played her last game in October 2010. She had a great attitude towards the game, and we have heard from many of her fellow golfers how much her presence will be missed on the links.</div><div> </div><div>Once thing that Christie, Jamie and I really cherish is memories of Mom and Dad's queen sized bed. It was a place where we would go as children when we had a bad dream, or just wanted the safety and comfort of being close to our parents. It was also a place where we celebrated birthdays! We would all climb in bed in the morning and the presents would magically appear from under the bed, and would be opened while surrounded by the whole family. In later years, whenever Christie or me would come to <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_11" class="blsp-spelling-error">Qualicum</span> to visit, we would always grab a cup of coffee and slip into bed with Mom to talk, or to share the paper. From Calgary, I would often grab a coffee on a weekend morning and call Mom from my bed to hers, just to chat. As Nana's grandchildren arrived, the bed was also a place for them to cuddle and watch T.V. The best place in the world to be.</div><div> </div><div>Seventeen years ago, Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Sh took the news with her regular aplomb, and chose <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_12" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">aggressive</span> treatment, fully supported by Dad, and chose not to focus on the negatives of the unfairness of this disease, as well, not wanting to worry her children.</div><div> </div><div>Mom and Dad moved to <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_13" class="blsp-spelling-error">Qualicum</span> in 1995 and <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_14" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">embraced</span> the Island life, enjoying golf, bridge and the gardening scene, while making new friends and encouraging old ones to move from the mainland. Mom was involved in Senior buttons at both <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_15" class="blsp-spelling-error">Eaglecrest</span> and Pheasant Glen, and she really enjoyed it, as it gave her an opportunity to meet even more women who shared her passion for golf - or was it passion for socializing?</div><div> </div><div>Whether it was a trip south or taking the kids to the beach, Mom embraced these events and holidays with zest.</div><div> </div><div>After Dad's stroke three years ago, she became active at the Gardens Care Home where he lives now and ran the Green Thumb Club. Dad also proudly offered up her recipe for ribs at the men's lunch club, where it quickly became a favorite meal for the group. She made the best of her sudden separation from Dad, filling her lonely hours with projects around the house, such as painting, and became interested in trying out new recipes to keep her mealtimes interesting. We are all thankful for her wonderful neighbours who kept an eye on her and made her feel safe at night, when she missed Dad the most. Having Jamie close by to assist with the household <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_16" class="blsp-spelling-error">chores</span> also gave her comfort and company. </div><div> </div><div>All of her grandchildren considered Nana and Papa's house a home away from home and it brought great joy to her to have them around as much as they were.</div><div> </div><div>Mom always put her husband, her children and here grandchildren first, and her acceptance of the seriousness of her illness not only helped us through our grief, but showed us that she was <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_17" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">satisfied</span> with her life, and we were all comforted by her actions and attitude.</div><div> </div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-5791922294266901992010-11-18T03:05:00.000-08:002010-11-18T03:09:21.655-08:00The Best Laid PlansSometimes, life throws us curveballs. We passed by many small farms, but mostly dry county, and the farms must get their water by wells, as a fellow we spoke to at one of the stores couldn't remember the last time it rained in town. Maybe 8 months ago? There were lots of big cacti, obviously thriving. They do cut the cacti down, but only after they are dead, as the wood of a live cacti becomes very fragile if you cut it, and the dead cacti produces a beautiful, lightweight wood. Cacti live 200 to 300 years, so they have to be patient to get the wood.<br /></div><div>The main attraction in the town of Humachuca is the San Fransisco Solano Church, where at noon, the statue of San Fransisco pops out of the clock tower and gives his blessing. (like a Coo Coo Clock) The locals certainly know where to find the touristas at noon, as just before he popped out of the clock, we were inundated with people selling jewelery, hats, key chains, and cocoa leaves. Brent "connected" with a cocoa leaf pusher, a little old lady who sold him two bags for $1.50. We popped a couple of small bundled up handfulls in our cheeks to test it out, as it is supposed to be good for altitude sickness, and I felt a wee bit affected by it, but was it just in my head? Brent said instead of altitude sickness, maybe it was better for attitude sickness...</div><br /><div>After we were blessed by SF, we climbed the stairs up to the monument that was built to honor the fighters of the War of Independence.</div><br /><div>On the way back, we stopped at the Tropic of Capricorn, which is the most southerly latitude which the sun can appear directly overhead at noon. This event occurs during the December Solstice. (in case you have forgotten your Geography from high school)</div><br /><div>Last stop is a small town, called Tilcara to see a partially reconstructed pre-Colombian fort, which is hailed as one of the most complex ruins in Argentina.</div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-39550810631955964132010-11-15T08:29:00.000-08:002010-11-15T08:39:13.887-08:00Travelling with BrentyAs some of you may know, Brent loves his cars. He looks after them and takes pride in their spotlessness. So, he was cautiously happy when we received a brand new car from Hertz. Not a ding on it and even the wheels were shiny, and 0 km's on the odometer. The first mistake was made by the navigator, who admittedly would rather look at the scenery than the map and the road signs. She took us off the main highway over to a gravel road, which, augh, got dust on the car. The next day, another navigational nightmare took us onto the salt flats via a very rough, thick with light, red dust road. The next two hours were spent worrying (not by the navigator) as to how the dust was going to be removed. Once we made it back to the hotel room, the navigator's washcloth was "borrowed" along with a jug of water, and the car was scrubbed and rinsed until all of the dirt was removed. The next day, we were parking in a narrow, cobblestone street in a small town, when Brent (the worry wart) decided that the side mirror needed to be tucked into the car to avoid another car sideswiping it, except that the mirror wasn't built for this, and snapped off in his hand! Not a word from the navigator, while Brent pressed the mirror back in, and spent the rest of the day worrying it would fall off. Luckily, it stayed in place until we returned the car!Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-5282724763774852572010-11-15T07:44:00.000-08:002010-11-15T08:29:00.524-08:00Colors and Salt FlatsHike out of Purmamarca<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJJ-Vn6p_TVJykncikpx5FQaAXkujaMpXASfhiKB6Vl3YIn94gxO5UoqevE0qotQgLgeYgsF23xDMahThlfgx9vNFV0qplGPB8A5M6gaaippFl3yZCbqdxYiUu5uABZC0yWSj3WA7pGq__/s1600/P1010556.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; The temperature varied from 24 C to 10 C at the peak, as it was a climb up to 4,170 metres. We stopped for a photo opportunity, but both of us felt dizzy from the lack of oxygen and the quick assent, so we were glad to make a fast decent to the salt flats. We have seen so many photos of salt flats, we were anxious to get there and followed the guide book to take the first gravel road off and then drive along to the flats. It was really dusty on the road, and by the time we got to the salt flats (they always look closer than they actually are!) the car was covered in fine, red dust. Along the way, we say wild Alpacha, and wild burrows. We headed back to the highway, only to discover that we only needed to drive another 1/2 km to an easy entrance onto the flats, situated by a restaurant that is no longer in use, but was totally built out of salt, even the tables. Apparently, they can't operate due to lack of water.</div><br /><div>On the drive back, we were stopped to take photos, and four bikers went by on old classic bikes. We could hear them chugging up the pass from a long ways away. We both sighed and wished we had access to our bikes as the ride would have been very very very very fun!</div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-60220501853527910552010-11-15T07:23:00.000-08:002010-11-15T07:44:32.575-08:00Road Trip November 12-15Purmamarca<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF1xYXnxKnPP446wFXiyKgl5oOThPgIQcCVYpxUQ-UV1fahADnrVBujFRrisBZE4Fi3r9yJx1DddwA2cH32GCWnM3Wu9TJaxwbe5DHhR33KZDvkQZv06hnB9Eho6uGBeJ1LY125NYWpri7/s1600/P1010641.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; The town is famous for its views of the Hills of Seven Colors. We arrived during siesta time, so everything was shut down, so we decided to get a room and join in the siesta.</div><br /><div>The town is quite touristy, and if you love to shop for Bolivian treasures, this is the place to do it. After dinner, we were wandering around town and heard some music blasting, so we went to explore. There was a community fundraiser going on, so we paid our pesos and joined in. There were games and prizes for the kids and adults alike, along with Gaucho entertainment. (drums, guitars and violins) The funniest game I watched was the ring toss for pop or wine, or bottles of booze. No matter the age, if a 10 year old looped a bottle of wine, that's what they got! Drinking isn't a big deal here, and there is very little of it practiced with the local population. Kids were running around, dodging the dogs, grandparents, parents and babies. Everyone was having a great time, including us!</div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-29570865760177345322010-11-15T07:11:00.001-08:002010-11-15T07:22:53.474-08:00Salta,<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFeFtEPh6_g68JyPb1sVoX_Y8ghBoPMbkJhODkoY2mtFd1Mt6sWxUBntuQjvIh8IUoU6vAdNdYL06m5AZ9jxNZZxNKnMrSRy9bQHnpXCILLy5TTFnyr8mJTZMb6dQaDKZ4XNGvrHxC7p9x/s1600/Salta+003.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5539797219211343282" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFeFtEPh6_g68JyPb1sVoX_Y8ghBoPMbkJhODkoY2mtFd1Mt6sWxUBntuQjvIh8IUoU6vAdNdYL06m5AZ9jxNZZxNKnMrSRy9bQHnpXCILLy5TTFnyr8mJTZMb6dQaDKZ4XNGvrHxC7p9x/s320/Salta+003.jpg" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTQdbUYKN5FDXxkoLmFiPba9D4ZZvjyW7dex801z2G1w9aynJyz5L9hVmlvIJifehU8HSLZgaoT53TM1h0Xf8YnwyPMttcIKdxjcrLlUINujVJkbKQbd2VCKwLalUNXfxf2-aMo3WGy0rO/s1600/Salta+005.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5539796981653487762" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTQdbUYKN5FDXxkoLmFiPba9D4ZZvjyW7dex801z2G1w9aynJyz5L9hVmlvIJifehU8HSLZgaoT53TM1h0Xf8YnwyPMttcIKdxjcrLlUINujVJkbKQbd2VCKwLalUNXfxf2-aMo3WGy0rO/s320/Salta+005.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div>We started off our day with a hike up the mountain in Salta, leaving right from our apartment. There is a trail that has over 1,000 steps and features the 14 Stations of the Cross, depicting Jesus' last days. Once we reached the 14th, we were at the top of the mountain, and had an excellent view of the city below. There is a gondola option for those who don't want to climb. I was pretty happy with the hike, as this is by far the most walking I have been able to do, pretty much pain free. We toured the church, Caterdal de Salta, build in 1882, as well as the Museo de Arqueologia de Alta Montana. This museum features the mummified remains of three children 6, 7 and 15, as well as the objects burried near them. 600 years old, they were discovered in 1999, and their skin, hair and clothes were well preserved due to the high altitude they were discovered at. We both remembered hearing about this find in the news, as it was quite sensational. The other mummy in the museum is called queen of the mountains and was in a private collection for years, and as a result, not as well preserved.</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-32619373090006267132010-11-15T07:00:00.001-08:002010-11-15T07:11:33.002-08:00Travelling with BrentI decided to start a new ongoing blog about what it is like to travel with Brent. Especially when he doesn't have the password to this blog, or a clue on how to update it without me looking over his shoulder, I feel that I will be "safe" as far as any repercussions arise from my meanderings.<br /><br />When we were in Buenos Aries, our friend, Roy, took us to the San Telmo Market, which happens every Sunday and features hundreds of booths to shop at, as well as entertainment and restaurants. The first thing Brent buys is this hand made contraption for 5 pesos from a street vendor. It is quite ingeniously made, probably involves a toilet paper roll, some Styrofoam, and a string, but when you pull on the string, it makes a really loud noise like a chicken squawking, then clucking then almost squealing, depending on how hard you pull the string. It is really quite realistic. Once he had that special buy in his hot little hands, he succeeded to stroll behind Roy and I, making chicken noises. Everyone would stop and turn to look for the chicken! Roy and I concentrated on putting some distance between Brent and us, but he kept up with us, nonetheless.<br />So, last night, we were in our hotel room in the quite village of Purmamarca, where the hotel rooms were adequate, the dividing walls were not so great between hotel rooms. Needless to say, I know know that during "Siesta" time, not all people are Siesta-ing! Anyway, last night, there were some folks in the room next to us who had a couple of visitors over, and they were all chatting away, until someone started making loud chicken noises out of our room. It went dead quiet next door, and I am sure they are wondering to this day who in the hotel brought their own chickens!<br />As we lay in bed giggling about all the places Brent could bring his new toy, Brent came up with the best plan...I think we are attending a wedding next September? The city's name comes from the word "Sagta", which means "the very beautiful one." The region is filled with valleys, mountains, and the salt flats. The city has the best preserved Colonial Architecture in the county, and is located in North West Argentina, close to the Bolivian border.</div><br /><div>We had booked a hostel room for the first night, which was a great idea, as we didn't want to spend the morning walking the streets with our luggage hunting for a room, and it was close to the bus depot. Later that day, we found a great one bedroom apartment for $40 per night, ninth floor of the building, with a great view of the town square. </div><br /><div>We have booked a car for 3 days on Friday, as we need to get out of town due to a religious celebration and all of the rooms in the city are booked solid. We are looking forward to this trip, as all of the guide books recommend the driving route we have planned, with mountain vistas, canyon colors, and the salt flats all in one loop.</div><br /><div>We plan to come back to Salta and spend another week in our bargin apartment, as there is lots more to see of this city of 500,000.</div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-91005421511599035492010-11-06T17:51:00.000-07:002010-11-06T18:44:43.885-07:00Boat Ride and Jungle HikeToucan in the wild!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7vLkGe0McgpMytlSlS2Oobws5bB-4RmAZh51qCMZjxkC-tyZBGRmc7b4aDr2TagvoCsOmaYXLUCsrsJ41vGgWUOQykApM9h7VXWLQWDUHPZDPt1AaFk93_Nb1-Xhc1OIcPfecc0Pw7IdX/s1600/IMGP2339.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5536617455276461378" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7vLkGe0McgpMytlSlS2Oobws5bB-4RmAZh51qCMZjxkC-tyZBGRmc7b4aDr2TagvoCsOmaYXLUCsrsJ41vGgWUOQykApM9h7VXWLQWDUHPZDPt1AaFk93_Nb1-Xhc1OIcPfecc0Pw7IdX/s320/IMGP2339.JPG" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZOWOyJiWuFL4KBlZ1auwRcjfl-QUUchz4rusoVrpyFWIKOsV2fpqBE4T2Cu6uKhT_IUsNlBB2Qz2szdFe1HLaE-vZncQG7XcLUB9pshOyfsrNRtya6Go1H6DepSWX5sfPOdQ6Huo0ULZ7/s1600/IMGP2340.JPG"></a><br />A great place for sun!<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhROs5F9hThY-yooA_RjGMuGbGFhjx1eydC5dnPww2NMI_82cMDUXCiBkRiC4bGrPoRg0A86132BMJ0PofFNMLvm4VPWH4-4FX_nh3yiTIZmVQRS5PhzeX69mhRGXwC-isjBn4vqqTBvJa-/s1600/IMGP2340.JPG"></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiypB2rCCa0VvIvppdC6oXpFQemFt0MD24osXFwYLBpCJqdpn_bgkgH9BHHvrVlihAiTDglEZjswh53KGnky-96H6Cfv1dWrqw2hgKuPs5lfvRZucOWIQrFrS-Pb5tI9xo5uSYE0wLhlbcU/s1600/P1010437.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5536613936124752946" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiypB2rCCa0VvIvppdC6oXpFQemFt0MD24osXFwYLBpCJqdpn_bgkgH9BHHvrVlihAiTDglEZjswh53KGnky-96H6Cfv1dWrqw2hgKuPs5lfvRZucOWIQrFrS-Pb5tI9xo5uSYE0wLhlbcU/s320/P1010437.JPG" /></a><br /><div><div><br /><br /><div>Our hike into the falls.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhGDszrkMR_8dQBX2KjNa48MHCNPilXG6x3P_cF6RR9FoBlwmyv1NXUYjnIWsGEGAiRqG0K6tTZSChSJv2eyp_rdsd9LE5Uhy8FS5LT5o6roMQmjkrFh2vO_CW2ROg57H1XOKDhCR2ksuw/s1600/IMGP2333.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5536610029956113026" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhGDszrkMR_8dQBX2KjNa48MHCNPilXG6x3P_cF6RR9FoBlwmyv1NXUYjnIWsGEGAiRqG0K6tTZSChSJv2eyp_rdsd9LE5Uhy8FS5LT5o6roMQmjkrFh2vO_CW2ROg57H1XOKDhCR2ksuw/s320/IMGP2333.JPG" /></a><br />Red Snake warning. We dressed lightly, as we knew we were going to get wet, but didn't quite expect HOW wet we actually got! The boat went so close to the edge of the falls that we could see the rock underneath, and the spray was behind us! It was lots of fun, very refreshing and exhilarating!<br /></div><br /><div>After a rest in the sun to try to dry out, we went on a self guided jungle walk to see some more falls. This is by far the better way to experience the jungle, as the other option was to hop on a big 4 wheel drive buggy that carries 20 people, and the noise alone scares the animals away. So, we were lucky, and saw a Toucan, a rat-like animal, huge with no tail, two snakes and several large lizards. Only missing animal was a monkey!<br /></div><br /><div>We have enjoyed the town of Iguazu, as it is quite small, but has great restaurants, and shops to keep busy if you need a break from the falls. It is the first town we have experienced where they take their siestas seriously. Everything shuts down from about 1 pm until 4 ish. I can see in the hot weather how that makes sense, as they then stay open late until 9 or 10, when people feel like wandering the streets again.<br /></div><br /><div>Tomorrow, we take a long long bus trip 11 am until 12 pm the next day, to the North Western part of Argentina, to a town called Salta.</div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-8439078023734581972010-11-04T14:01:00.000-07:002010-11-05T08:05:08.901-07:00Bye BA Hello CountrysideSo close! Very comfortable way to travel, and very reasonable. $200 for both of us. We both slept well and settled into our new accommodations upon arrival. We have downsized and down priced a bit $30 per night for both of us in a cozy hostel, that includes breakfast and a pool! It is a bit of a rabbit maze to get to our room, and I am glad that Brent has no issues with carrying my 50 lb suitcase down 12 steps, along a corridor, up 16 steps, along a corridor, down a ramp, along the hallway, then up another 26 steps to our room! Our room is cozy, and actually sleeps 4, if you include the bunk bed, but for our big dollars, we don't have to share, and even have our own shower and toilet! Nothing but the best!<br /><br /></div><div>It is much warmer here than it was in Buenos Aires, and I'm guessing in the low to mid 30's. </div><br /><div>We were up and ready to head for the Falls by about 10 am. Taller than Niagara and wider than Victoria Falls, the falls actually consist of over 275 separate falls. What is really amazing and fantastic, is that the area is undeveloped and very well set up for a park. We took the local bus into the park, and walked on the trails which eventually turn into metal boardwalks that bring you extremely close to the falls, above, and below, and even across them! I could have taken hundreds of photos, but tried to get the best ones up on the blog for all to share! Too much to take in with the heat and humidity, we are going back tomorrow to do more hiking, a swim and to take the speed boats that go right under the falls!</div><br /><div>We plan to stay here for a few days, and "chill" as well as soak in the sun, before moving westward to an area called Salta.</div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-81138369344690021852010-11-01T16:15:00.000-07:002010-11-02T05:25:09.788-07:00Day trip to Tigre Delta<span style="color:#0000ff;">Best deal in town. It is an area developed in the late 1800 heyday of the rich Buenos Aries elite. There is a large market there, an amusement park, and restaurants. The area is surrounded by canals where the elite built summer homes and a boat ride through the canals should prove interesting.<br /></div><br /><br /><div>For $1.30 each, we hopped the train and took the hour ride out to the area. We were excited to hop on the water taxis to tour the canals, but were disappointed to hear that the water levels were too low, and the taxis were not running. I guess the lack of rain has effected the public transport system up there. So, we decided to go to the market. Brent bought a new muggers wallet for $3.00, genuine leather! He plans to reload it with his extra "your name here" credit cards and a little cash.<br /></div><br /><br /><div>We are getting ready to leave our fancy pancy apartment tomorrow and catch the overnight bus north to a place called Iguazu Falls. It is on the border of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina and it takes about 17 hours on the bus. We have booked first class on a double decker bus, and has hot meal service and private seats that fold out flat to a bed. Seems like the way to travel in the country, if one has time.</div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-40753413805544101282010-10-30T13:53:00.001-07:002010-11-01T16:15:16.273-07:00Colors of Buenos AriesYummy treats available daily!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAOukDeIq6O6p9LXuPFYeWtmUJ3XGTIQCW9TI4HlfO2XbBDh7n16cG7UpID7ZIWhRvhAp_9t1y9s43NRX9qg8_LKjhBi6m0Ihf6JOGHjTMMwV3N3Tlhu_Rp0cXhTH2wiUd-gYSsODiy0WC/s1600/IMGP2316.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5534723669196561842" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAOukDeIq6O6p9LXuPFYeWtmUJ3XGTIQCW9TI4HlfO2XbBDh7n16cG7UpID7ZIWhRvhAp_9t1y9s43NRX9qg8_LKjhBi6m0Ihf6JOGHjTMMwV3N3Tlhu_Rp0cXhTH2wiUd-gYSsODiy0WC/s320/IMGP2316.JPG" /></a><br /><div>Every day, I pick up fresh bread and food for dinner at the local market. I think the rain reflected the citizens of Argentina's feelings, as it was a very sad day for the country. With the husband of the President passing away so quickly, the whole country was in shock and mourning. The plaza in front of the House of Government building filled with people, and the casket was in the "Pink Palace" for two days, while the public lined up to go by and pay their respect to him and his family. All of the Presidents from South America flew in to see the family and to stand by his coffin. The people were so close to the President, she would, from time to time, go towards the viewers and hug or thank one, or accept flowers, flags, or items and place them on his coffin. I was so touched by the passion the people showed and the pure support they had for her and her family, as well, how orderly and non-threatening the people were. </div><br /><div>As his coffin left the Palace, the streets were lined with adoring people, waving flags, banners, and running alongside the hearse to place items on the roof of the hearse. Flowers, flags, hard hats, jerseys were all some of the items. The family then boarded a plane with the coffin and flew to his hometown for burial. </div><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-51229094182870305452010-10-27T13:31:00.000-07:002010-10-27T13:39:43.986-07:00Wierd Day TodayToday was a Census day in Argentina. They do a manual census every 10 years, so it is the law that all businesses have to close, and no one can work. They only have essential services running. I had to go downtown for my Spanish lesson, so I took the subway downtown. There was only me and three other people on the train. Usually, we are squished in together like my toes in pointy shoes. When I got off at my station, the busiest part of the downtown in BA, there were no cars, no people and all the businesses were closed. It was so quiet, and very eerie. As I walked down to my teacher's place, I saw very few people on the street, and I felt like I was in a TV show where something dreadful had happened. Good thing we have some food at home, as you couldn't even buy a stick of gum anywhere in the city today. The stores can re-open at 8 pm tonight.<br />On top of that, the husband of the President of Argentina died of a heart attack this morning, suddenly. He was the past President of Argentina, and quite beloved, so people were also in shock and there will be a lot coming up with regards to his passing. Interesting times. I feel bad for the citizens, as now there will be unrest in the government, as he was expected to win the election next year.Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-11920962642263653882010-10-26T13:54:00.000-07:002010-10-26T15:45:02.561-07:00Hola de Buenos AriesBig billboards<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbVIumzOsgAnuI5MSAgAD1f6pjLAgWCbi_lUo85jiwAv0MbPveEnAZQsgnz44gNbizctFoJG7jVlCK3czbVI3gBj_n36wVUyvgBTEwuE68qb19qG_rnvqK_oy32MD8JdSAyYkPzBeyK7Mt/s1600/around+BA+001.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5532485927761633890" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbVIumzOsgAnuI5MSAgAD1f6pjLAgWCbi_lUo85jiwAv0MbPveEnAZQsgnz44gNbizctFoJG7jVlCK3czbVI3gBj_n36wVUyvgBTEwuE68qb19qG_rnvqK_oy32MD8JdSAyYkPzBeyK7Mt/s320/around+BA+001.jpg" /></a><br /><div>Big monument. But, don't ask me what they reply to me, as they speak so darnded fast! I am enjoying the Spanish lessons, however, and it is helping me to read some of the signs better, etc.</div><br /><br /><div>Every culture is different, and the people who live here have a different lifestyle than we are used to in Canada. First of all, they only sleep an average of 4-6 hours per night, which is very efficient, but I can't for the life of me see how they can manage without more sleep! They don't eat dinner until at least 9:30 pm, and even that is early for them, most of the time, its 11pm or midnight! Brent and I tried to go to a special BBQ place at 6 for dinner, and they don't even open until 8:30 pm! We hear traffic, and people visiting at 3 in the morning, all the time. I think BA is "The City that Never Sleeps" , not New York! My Spanish teacher can't believe that I go to bed at 10 pm and get up at 8:30 am....<br /></div><div>We have twice seen a young man surrounded by his friends, covered in some kind of egg/flour creation, which is quite comical. We were told that this is to celebrate either graduation from University, or an upcoming wedding.</div><div></div><div>The people here are very friendly, and really like to show off their English when they get a chance. There is a couple of servers at Starbucks who recognize me and say, Hey, Canada! How are you? I tell them how good their English is, and they tell me that their teacher would be proud.<br /></div><div>Today, we went to rent bicycles and take them to an ecological reserve, where there are 10 km's of trails and over 200 bird species living in the park. It was nice to just pop across the street and be in a completely tranquil area. We cycled along the ocean for a while, too. The breeze was nice, as the weather was the best day we have had yet. About 25 and no wind or clouds in the sky. My arm held up really well. It is much better riding than walking, as long as the road isn't too bumpy, it's just like at spin class, but much more interesting!</div><div> </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-40511586613531947812010-10-21T11:39:00.000-07:002010-10-23T05:35:43.629-07:00Around Town<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtRx2ndWrGfrQmdBkWBOLOb6pQd5dkaPYs1rmGTOwAx06PltpCQTCP4rVkqK5AYI_aBIiszu9G1Z41-ELeKrm91eak13RHiksn_f4yn9obCVY8eMKm-3nncN-MF1SQopb6d3k09ooxWPhJ/s1600/P1010346.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5531219030202422578" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtRx2ndWrGfrQmdBkWBOLOb6pQd5dkaPYs1rmGTOwAx06PltpCQTCP4rVkqK5AYI_aBIiszu9G1Z41-ELeKrm91eak13RHiksn_f4yn9obCVY8eMKm-3nncN-MF1SQopb6d3k09ooxWPhJ/s320/P1010346.JPG" /></a> Perro Mobile<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUmUZ_qrDXtAqnjYGeDmNSlkx6U7ymH2cVe1oHE-ey0O2S0rbbeXzKWOdNZg355b0NnbWEaCTYbB0vr4LEhBL3jaXqG6D84dtXoP94Vt_Hsct4kRCnRBHPm8vy5yj3LeWs4lwId0Vh8kN6/s1600/P1010340.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5531218622235168546" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUmUZ_qrDXtAqnjYGeDmNSlkx6U7ymH2cVe1oHE-ey0O2S0rbbeXzKWOdNZg355b0NnbWEaCTYbB0vr4LEhBL3jaXqG6D84dtXoP94Vt_Hsct4kRCnRBHPm8vy5yj3LeWs4lwId0Vh8kN6/s320/P1010340.JPG" /></a> Muchos Perros<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1SW_EPpJuU32SY6X8fSleA49NZ13NGWBkaWPRVvo0J_3QkZGj-zhkmYc2iUWH-gJiHm8Jxgzu2IqQBezBhYFlu68axxK6KniIegpH82iGcKLQtsy52XwPkNGm6bpzBRPgBFOs6jxjP91j/s1600/P1010341.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5531218080098096354" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1SW_EPpJuU32SY6X8fSleA49NZ13NGWBkaWPRVvo0J_3QkZGj-zhkmYc2iUWH-gJiHm8Jxgzu2IqQBezBhYFlu68axxK6KniIegpH82iGcKLQtsy52XwPkNGm6bpzBRPgBFOs6jxjP91j/s320/P1010341.JPG" /></a> Japanese Gardens<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMOl51FyAx_S9zz7eT44ugEpSUdA3QOdB76RwzYsJhju6r5R3yhGrzQ6fdieOG0gXLKAcjfhxzvyz8DttkK-ZESOzeBsnIeclGByv3iF2SzI0cX3HNayykgWrZPlauH2fDb0Mss9sFVj8K/s1600/womens+bridge+002.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5531217423990995394" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMOl51FyAx_S9zz7eT44ugEpSUdA3QOdB76RwzYsJhju6r5R3yhGrzQ6fdieOG0gXLKAcjfhxzvyz8DttkK-ZESOzeBsnIeclGByv3iF2SzI0cX3HNayykgWrZPlauH2fDb0Mss9sFVj8K/s320/womens+bridge+002.jpg" /></a> Women's Bridge. The next day, a caretaker heard a noise coming out of her mauselom and contaced the family. When they opened the coffin, she was dead, but had been alive and was trying to escape. The family designed this new mauselem and the statue is of her. Her hand is on the door, as she is trying to get out. They told us that her ghose has been seen wandering the cementary in a white dress.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJGOoD4HdmB3gQEk3YZLjTbdRNcQV9yboueVD8nZ3E67A8SNnt2-D3cm-A5VVl0TC_Zf20sDzXi87gTEd8MxiTXsq9cYXgUajII5vyG-2T7qx02hqaY76xuaOXw9Q6k-MQUn9A-di7I5xI/s1600/Recolletta+grave+4.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5530587433500196498" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJGOoD4HdmB3gQEk3YZLjTbdRNcQV9yboueVD8nZ3E67A8SNnt2-D3cm-A5VVl0TC_Zf20sDzXi87gTEd8MxiTXsq9cYXgUajII5vyG-2T7qx02hqaY76xuaOXw9Q6k-MQUn9A-di7I5xI/s320/Recolletta+grave+4.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx2u0wNil8MzecsUwGCJzqPRF4oOAxVmQG7yynN4aXMKbqiipF_Bj8pIN1WLZNpSh0zgS6oEFUJKp7Aw2i-D2TkIR_R98SXe0-ojfIDJLSfc0dqhygv1a0UXbohx0Ol8-cSUFQC_Jb12MG/s1600/Recolletta+grave+2.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5530586690035393282" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx2u0wNil8MzecsUwGCJzqPRF4oOAxVmQG7yynN4aXMKbqiipF_Bj8pIN1WLZNpSh0zgS6oEFUJKp7Aw2i-D2TkIR_R98SXe0-ojfIDJLSfc0dqhygv1a0UXbohx0Ol8-cSUFQC_Jb12MG/s320/Recolletta+grave+2.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpX7XZoeixflg5hqu4fGST3ypiQ2LtpHKMBUvIedL7i8S60cKNNDDwaqLcfEUgP215fYhbHQ8nn_WYhRFno3RZQEgN_D6kGVHJxUxAELepBnJ-JFPMZDWlLfL3SFm2Zeu1I94BHHqF984p/s1600/Recoletta+grave+3.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5530585383435401826" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpX7XZoeixflg5hqu4fGST3ypiQ2LtpHKMBUvIedL7i8S60cKNNDDwaqLcfEUgP215fYhbHQ8nn_WYhRFno3RZQEgN_D6kGVHJxUxAELepBnJ-JFPMZDWlLfL3SFm2Zeu1I94BHHqF984p/s320/Recoletta+grave+3.jpg" /></a><br />This person died on her honemoon. Brent and I went to the Japanese Gardens, and wandered around in the peaceful setting. Brent went to Peurto Madero, a new section of the city, with a bridge dedicated to women that swings to let the larger boats through. We had a great tour of the Recoleta Cemetery and took photos of the graves we saw. This is the third most famous cemetery in the world, second only to one in Paris and one in Italy. It is the smallest cemetery in the city, but hosts 21 presidents, and other famous and wealthy folks. Including the fellow who figured out how to take lactate out of milk. No, his mausoleum is not shaped like a cow. These mausoleums are purchased by a family for up to $50,000 and hold up to 100 coffins at a time. When they get too full, they either move or cremate the remains. They can also sell these to another person, and move all of the remains to another location. The cats are said to keep the spirits inside the cemetery. </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-32476657216620128112010-10-16T07:23:00.000-07:002010-10-16T08:07:12.656-07:00Where Are We?<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyZLQGjGC-Do6-Rnvcy4QL_frpnjQqlZM1M6NOaElL-kvR_sk4iypqO3aHV1yea1yKLmhQKKSFeZSwEcfk1N4_Nj1mRbWblrVTskdmaN1D3dyQaWmeyV6ANm5P9fqC3tTg2ICqx-_fk4YB/s1600/IMGP2260.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; To us, it feels like New York, with the busy streets, subway, thousands of cabs, a central park, high end shopping, and apartments instead of houses. The difference is that it is cheaper than New York and hardly anyone speaks English!<br /></div><br /><div>The city has a real European feel to it, as well. The architecture reflects several influences from Spanish, French and other cities. There is a strong Italian influence as well, and many Italian restaurants to tempt us. We went out for pizza the other night and found a great spot, with dark wood, candles and the windows wide open so we could watch the action on the street. We decided to sit inside and had a large pizza and drinks for $20. We couldn't finish the pizza. It was overloaded with cheese, although tasty, it was way too much for us! Part of the bill referred to either "cutlery" or "covered", which we think meant that we paid extra to sit inside. Hard to say, but at the price, we were not going to question it<br /></div><br /><div>We have been spending most of our days walking the various barrios (neighbourhoods) of the city. Our barrio is called Palermo, and we are close to most of the tourist sights, and the other high end barrios. We spent a day in the park, walking the paths and watching families, couples and singles as they enjoyed the "Mothers Day" holiday in the sunshine. It is early spring here, so the 25 degree weather and blue sky brought the people out. They have a huge rose garden in this park, and it will be stunning in a couple of weeks when all of the buds open.<br /></div><br /><div>One thing we don't see a lot of here is littering. The streets are clean, and the city has a full force of garbage workers who keep the cans empty. In the evenings, they go through the garbage and split it up for recycling.<br /></div><br /><div>We have had no problems navigating the streets with our maps, although Brent is much better at it than I am.<br /></div><br /><div>I have made may way twice to my Spanish lesson location, which takes me about 45 minutes to get to by foot/subway combined. I blend in much better by myself without blondie by my side, as there are no fair-haired men wandering around the city. Brent really stands out. (but we already know that!)</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>I had my first two hour Spanish lesson, one on one, and really enjoyed it. I am learning mostly grammar right now, along with pronouncing letter combinations, numbers, etc. I feel like I am learning how to read all over again, just like grade 8!!!<br /></div><br /><div>Brent spent his lesson money on a satchel, which is better for carrying the laptop around in, as well, will make a better carry on bag than our tacky packsack.</div><br /><br /><div>After one week, we are settling into our apartment, and love the pace of life. </div><br /><br /><div>I am keeping up with my daily physio exercises, and have to watch how far I walk in a day, as that is when the arm gives me the most grief. Pace myself, right Mom?<br /></div><br /><div>Anyway, we hope to tour the large graveyard next week, after wandering through it in the rain the other day. It is where the famous are buried, one such person being Eva Perron. All of the tombs are above ground, and have gates on them, some glassed in, some open, and you can see the caskets right there. Air Nance booked us a very smooth journey through San Fransisco, where we only had about 30 minutes to wait for our flight to Lima. After landing in Lima, we went straight to our connection, which went smoothly. We were lucky to secure seats for two all of the way, so we had room to stretch out, and get up without disturbing anyone. Brent slept quite a bit, but I only slept for about an hour. </div><div><br /></div><div>Our VIP car service met us at the airport, and wisked us to our apartment. It took a good hour to get through the city, as it was rush hour, and we passed through three toll booths, and slowed for the traffic. We were both sitting there wondering how we would have navigated the traffic on our motorcycles, deciding it would have been very stressful to do.</div><div><br /></div><div>We are very pleased with our accommidations, a beautiful new apartment building, with full security, a rooftop pool, a gym, air conditioning. We are the first to stay in the aparment, and there are even suites on our floor that are still being worked on. The gym is not open yet, so I negotiated a reduction in the rent, and the pool is not open yet, as it is still "spring" here and apparently too cold for swimming!</div><div><br /></div><div>I am having issues connecting with the wireless system in our apartment, so we have had to resort to going to McDonalds for coffee so I can get on their wireless system here. Not like at home, as we are sitting in a private cafe, drinking Espresso Largo, which they serve with small cookies and sparkling water. There is even a private guard in this area! </div><div><br /></div><div>Once we had rested up from our flights, we have been touring the different areas of the city by foot, discovering that there are many neighbourhoods close by for shopping, dining and stopping for coffee. Most of the shops we have seen in our area are very high end, with an abundance of men's stores, which Brent has enjoyed going through. I truly have never seen so many men's stores, and all upper end. My shoulder is holding up pretty well with all of the walking, and on average, we have been doing about 10 km per day. The coffee stops help, and the pain fades quickly after a good shot of esspresso!</div><div> </div><div>Yesterday, we met our friend, Roy, for lunch. He is a wealth of information on BA, and helped us to buy minutes on our cellphone, which we can use to call him or text him. The lunch was also an experience, with three different yummy cuts of beef (ribs, steak, and something else) which we shared, with some side dishes. We will be meeting Roy tomorrow to go on a tour of the Market area, that only happens on Sundays.</div><div><br /></div><div>Today, we took a 3 1/2 hour tour of the city through the company we rented the apartment from. It was very worthwhile, and helped us to decide on which areas of the city we would like to return to see. We took the subway down to meet our tourbus, and it was easy and safe to use. Oops, maybe not that safe. On the way home, we experienced our first unsafe moment. We were getting on in a very touristy area, and the subway platform was not busy. When our train arrived, we went to get on, and all of the sudden there were 5-6 other people pushing to get in the same door as us. I just figured that they all push to get in, even though there was lots of room on the train. I heard Brent say, hey, hey! And turn around. As the door closed, there was a large man looking at Brent, holding his hands up, as if to say, "what?" The other people who were trying to get on, did not, and disappeared on the platform. So, here's what happened. As we were getting on the train, the big man stopped in front of Brent and 3 others pushed against him, as if trying to get on the train. One person picked his back pocket, even opening his zipper that closed the pocket, and took out his "mugger" wallet. This is a "fake" wallet that he was carrying, that had fake credit cards in it (they all say, your name here on them) and a small amount of cash. (less than $20) Even though we weren't concerned about the theft, we still felt violated, and realized how quickly something can happen in the middle of the day. We do not carry our passports, or any large amounts of cash on us, and always put the money in separate pockets and areas on us. Even so, we will be uber dilligent in the future about our belongings.</div><div><br /><br />More photos to follow! I'm having computer issues again.</div><div><br /> </div><div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-25598599645398405382010-09-22T09:20:00.000-07:002010-09-22T17:32:19.116-07:00Progress Report<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhECkTreZovPeQHOyi57-E5hORhhRrUGPVlCR7LuL05350AAQ-N47NdmyUvNaJpLJx8acCGFukBSKPt_qhkjH_WysPohBIofIYbnFMDejs709LYGwBG95yyk_r6jMKUFXqaGYlfCYOz2dqb/s1600/Fernie+photos+013.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; I flew home to Calgary and went into the hospital for surgery. I was all prepped and ready to go, and when I met my surgeon, he told me that he wasn't going to do the surgery and sent me home. There is quite a bit of controversy on the type of injury I have as to whether surgery is beneficial or not. About 50% of surgeons opt for surgery and the other (you do the math) prefer to let the bone heal on its own. Very confusing and frustrating. I was also told not to do any physiotherapy on the arm. I finally got in to see a sports medicine Doc, and he suggested physiotherapy, and seemed to agree with the surgeon on waiting to let the bone heal. The physiotherapy was a Godsend, as it really helped me deal with the pain, and get the arm moving again. After 4 weeks, I have now seen the surgeon again, and the bone is healing, but still broken. He gave me the go ahead to resume travelling, although definitely NOT on the motorcycle, and I have to keep up the physio. No problem there!</div><br /><div>In the meantime, Brent headed back to Quebec to pick up his motorcycle and arrange for my bike to be shipped back home for repair. Brent had a great ride back, and I was envious of his good weather and stamina for riding long distances. He stopped just outside of Quebec City and stayed in Saint Annes, where he was thrilled to get free accommodation at a local campground, if he was on a pilgrimage to see the beautiful church there. The church was stunning, and filled with old crutches stacked up the columns in the church from people who claim to have been cured from visiting the church.<br /></div><div>Bent also stopped at our friends place (Brian and Tania) again in Winnipeg, and became a really cowboy, enjoying a beautiful horseback ride on their acreage, with nice weather.<br /></div><div>He stopped to visit his Mom in Wolseley and raved about her homemade donuts, as well, helped out with yardwork. Finally, he had a quick visit (one night) in Saskatoon, where he stayed with our nephew and got to see our latest grand-nephew, who is growing like a weed! A quick dinner with friends and he was on his way back to Calgary.<br /></div><br /><div>We have been living in Fernie at our condo, and are fortunate that we have the second location, as we have a friend living at our house and didn't want to disrupt her life too much! It is definitely fall here in Fernie, and we are anxious to get rolling again, and miss the snow all together.<br /></div><br /><div>We plan to fly to Buenos Aires and rent an apartment for a month while I continue to recover, and then tour around South America. Since we won't have the bikes with us, we are considering flying east around the world, as flights and our interests take us. Kind of a mystery tour, ending in Calgary mid June. Stay tuned for our updates via this website!</div><br /><div>And, thanks friends and family for all of your support and kind words during this time!!! </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-34822834031787663312010-08-20T12:45:00.000-07:002010-08-20T13:11:13.039-07:00End of the Road... The clavicle is broken in a bad spot, and a couple of ligaments have torn off, requiring surgery. The bad news is that the recovery time is 3 months, which puts our trip on hold, sending me back to Calgary for surgery and recovery.</div><br /><div>I will be flying home in the next few days, and then dealing with the surgery there, hopefully getting in as soon as possible. Brent will return the car to Baie-Comeau, arrange for my bike to be shipped back, and then ride his bike back to Calgary by himself. Both of us are not looking forward to this scenario, but it is necessary.</div><br /><div>Needless to say, we are terribly disappointed, but will try to make the best of my recovery by heading to our condo in Fernie and enjoying the mountain life. Maybe even do a trip out to the coast to see family. Things are really up in the air until we learn more about my surgery.</div><br /><br /><br /><div>So, to those of you in Calgary, see you soon, and to friends and family from across Canada, I sign off on this blog until our new journey resumes.</div><div> </div><div>Nance</div></div></div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-77131002320793730332010-08-15T16:49:00.000-07:002010-08-15T17:27:54.803-07:00Summerside to New Glasgow to North Rustico<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIqsw3IdIXnzQDLELwKLJpaQLBZCFV_UZ72A7w2J1PqsxhUNSbsSjK5xqpLcmjhVzYKVtytB79jlZJmpm6fu3DiiXqvGiXtDrP-YVZDQEFqT-fh_DbHjRhQ5UvI7_bPMXUknNXXhRcDgqk/s1600/Picture+145.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; After a couple of weeks of feeling pretty good, I guess the swelling had gone down, and the pain kicked in. I had the shoulder re-xrayed, and the doctor recommended that I book in to see an Orthopedic Surgeon, as my clavicle is broken in a spot that doesn't heal well and sometimes surgery is better. Not the news I was hoping for, and Brent had to console me on the way back from the visit, as the tears were flowing pretty heavily.<br />I promptly got on the web and discovered that only 10% of clavicle breaks require surgery, and mostly due to motorcycle accidents due to the higher speeds involved. Hmm. Sounds familiar...<br />I really want to go with the doctor's recommendations, so that I don't suffer down the road with this injury, and have it affect golf, skiing, tennis, swimming, running, and mostly, the rest of my motorcycle trip.<br />We moved on from Summerside and found a great place to "camp" using a camping cabin, with a bed that I can get in and out of, as my abdominal/rib area is still to sore to enable me to get up off the ground. The weather is fantastic, and we spent the day at the red sand beach, and I couldn't get up the nerve to swim, as only one arm would prove challenging, it was nice to be among the land of the living, with kids, dogs and bathing beauties to keep us amused.<br />After a couple of nights, we were told that the campground is sold out for the weekend, so we had to look for alternate accommodations.<br />I found a great spot, and talked the guy into renting us a place for $10 more than the camping cabin, so we have deemed this the accommodation deal of the trip so far. It's a 5th wheel trailer, with a double bed, a tv, microwave, oven, fridge and shower/washroom. And, it's 10 minutes from the beach! Very quiet, private and has a pool on the grounds! We may never leave. We are hunkered down here until next week, as my appointment with the Doc is Wednesday. Then, we will decide what to do after that.<br />We popped into Charlottown, and enjoyed a nice meal in there and walked around the historic downtown. We plan to go back there for a longer visit- it's quite beautiful there.Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414657895289487387.post-88245104262060424692010-08-10T17:11:00.000-07:002010-08-10T17:36:48.281-07:00Monton, NB to Summerside, PEI<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis5EnZmP4db6TkTHyGJyVr6WyGVBOX5xDNZLuz-agE00xhz_vziecDsCPuMkLSyDs6-XMPNkw6uno_EwYlKxSbfG1Y_w9c21tdT0Ltkrtpsf9HJyXZlXUBAVd5BXtg8ZWP_zEkEPiSJCTi/s1600/Picture+136.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503944041712364242" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis5EnZmP4db6TkTHyGJyVr6WyGVBOX5xDNZLuz-agE00xhz_vziecDsCPuMkLSyDs6-XMPNkw6uno_EwYlKxSbfG1Y_w9c21tdT0Ltkrtpsf9HJyXZlXUBAVd5BXtg8ZWP_zEkEPiSJCTi/s320/Picture+136.jpg" /></a> Confederation Bridge<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYbtI_zjmQsSLR9NOVEoSv30h9qsOKnCvOaUQ1bkPC5-C6QKIzSjcyNg8f-ug11Hzfd40MorlRu2ImG0yGnrguyThobPklOYc7OU8nIloHtiaRPrJbHN89cmXPFW9GMrCdH_sdSGW-JApA/s1600/Picture+138.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503943676064848450" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYbtI_zjmQsSLR9NOVEoSv30h9qsOKnCvOaUQ1bkPC5-C6QKIzSjcyNg8f-ug11Hzfd40MorlRu2ImG0yGnrguyThobPklOYc7OU8nIloHtiaRPrJbHN89cmXPFW9GMrCdH_sdSGW-JApA/s320/Picture+138.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg-wzBp_no4jr2WhspfWvd3OkyUxpkus_9f50WkntLrHvmrVg3MkkzuC121o2YKQ_vfIOhTNhsRPnOWqUwKI8_yODeHT6SwHyfHTtljtZo3-nrG48vtUCI66-jJnyzzpxT9g7uQwmd6HM2/s1600/Picture+139.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503943252290979746" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg-wzBp_no4jr2WhspfWvd3OkyUxpkus_9f50WkntLrHvmrVg3MkkzuC121o2YKQ_vfIOhTNhsRPnOWqUwKI8_yODeHT6SwHyfHTtljtZo3-nrG48vtUCI66-jJnyzzpxT9g7uQwmd6HM2/s320/Picture+139.jpg" /></a> North Cape<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj26Io6g9eyu3MdzTvhqJAXcrwNMK9nYwBZcmU0M6ISW1gUDrwPN6gx5DC5EENuBH8AO69-lMwnvnjk9aGxE5Q1GrtNCn50PYQaumJglicY7xEoy944m3Nt7jU8-Ck0Bg5MU7DuqtVGALYy/s1600/Picture+140.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503942814627209506" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj26Io6g9eyu3MdzTvhqJAXcrwNMK9nYwBZcmU0M6ISW1gUDrwPN6gx5DC5EENuBH8AO69-lMwnvnjk9aGxE5Q1GrtNCn50PYQaumJglicY7xEoy944m3Nt7jU8-Ck0Bg5MU7DuqtVGALYy/s320/Picture+140.jpg" /></a> North Cape<br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWYqDfNk7VhEjiaE0RvmFSpfwQH49KYjiVgjzovPMCn2T4XKSTsOe_tXUUkL4hHyvLallV__-CUODamV6jf_6TTTKr6cke03stdnUYEHansSW5zhMZqrh9GpGhPYYlj6eNnMuifIySBEHq/s1600/Picture+141.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503942365589968722" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWYqDfNk7VhEjiaE0RvmFSpfwQH49KYjiVgjzovPMCn2T4XKSTsOe_tXUUkL4hHyvLallV__-CUODamV6jf_6TTTKr6cke03stdnUYEHansSW5zhMZqrh9GpGhPYYlj6eNnMuifIySBEHq/s320/Picture+141.jpg" /></a> Skinner's Beach<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBxPcPXVN3hQhRaG5yHpg7aEYsFX1OEg6FzfZUii9FMlyJJdwwxu4sxc602ffpdTqbh-Tm80HoT7l5PyjJNK6EEYnFPC_TdLmF137XyAVBBUS7RfjtPnYqW3c0vE16qTbEEBezxyOVfZES/s1600/Picture+144.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503941901987619522" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBxPcPXVN3hQhRaG5yHpg7aEYsFX1OEg6FzfZUii9FMlyJJdwwxu4sxc602ffpdTqbh-Tm80HoT7l5PyjJNK6EEYnFPC_TdLmF137XyAVBBUS7RfjtPnYqW3c0vE16qTbEEBezxyOVfZES/s320/Picture+144.jpg" /></a> Bud the Spud<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>We stopped at the BMW Motorcycle shop in Moncton, where we will be back to get our bikes serviced for their 40,000 km. Nice big shop, and our main purpose was to shop for a new helmet for me. Sad to see the Arai go, as I liked the color and the fit, but after a knock like I received on the noggin, it's always prudent to replace the helmet. There was much discussion about the "worth" of my head, and it ranged from the $159 special to the $1,000 Beamer deluxe. Brent asked if I was planning on any more falls in the near future, so that maybe it would be a better idea to get the cheaper model, as it is easier for the budget to replace. Photo to follow of my new Beamer helmet...Sometimes a gal just has to put her foot down.<br /></div><div>The bridge crossing (Confederation Bridge) was amazing. It is hard to imagine the engineers looking across the water and thinking, yeah, we could build a bridge that long. It is free to go into PEI, and you pay about $50 to come back off the island.</div><br /><div>We stopped in Summerside and got a hotel room for a couple of nights, with intentions to explore the northern part of the island. We drove as far north as you can in the afternoon, and really enjoyed the drive, going from small town to small town, with beautiful farmhouses, and coastal views. We even stopped at Stompin Tom's hometown, Skinners Pond, and took a photo of the oldest schoolhouse in PEI, where he attended school in 1940. </div><br /><div>Weird thing to note, but very appealing: If you are a lover of lawn mowing, you want to buy property in PEI. The yards are huge and have huge lawns! We must have counted 30 people mowing their lawns by the riding mowers, and about another 5 with the push mowers. Would be quite a workout! I'll try to get some photos of this later!</div></div></div></div></div></div>Nance and Brent McDougallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03101670252105354075noreply@blogger.com0
